Our Editorial Process

Are you curious about what goes on behind the closed doors of afterva? How is all of the content created and who does it?

Well, it’s not as if it’s a big secret because the concept for afterva is modeled like an open floor plan with no doors and full transparency. We have absolutely nothing to hide because all we’re trying to do is simply be ourselves and no one else.

Below is one of our bedrock principles.

“I learned that being truthful was an extension of my freedom to be me. I believe that people who are one way on the inside and believe that they need to be another way outside to please others become conflicted and often lose touch with what they really think and feel. It’s difficult for them to be happy and almost impossible for them to be at their best. I know that’s true for me.”

Ray Dalio

Our editorial process at afterva is described below with an emphasis on truth and transparency.

Who Writes

Every single word from our articles is written by a licensed doctor. That was true, still is, and always will be because that is our promise to you.

As of the moment, this monumental task is being undertaken by Dr David Chen.

Dr-David-Chen-DDS

David Chen, DDS

Dentist/Author

Dr Chen is still practicing general dentistry full time in Long Island City. In his free time, he is working on afterva to complete the oral health library.

He does all of the writing, fact checking, and reviewing prior to publishing. All subsequent edits will also be done by him and by none other.

Hopefully more doctors will join us in our endeavors in the future as we grow.

Who Films

All of our videos are filmed by Dr Chen with his Pixel 3.

The setting and filming location will be either at our dental practice or at his humble abode. Yes, he is working tirelessly to complete this library of oral health information.

Our video content will be hosted and available for everyone on our Youtube channel. This is actually our first time creating videos so we are learning as we go along. The format and quality will improve over time as we get better at it.

Who Illustrates

Our goal is to create all of our own unique imagery.

They will either be taken at our dental office or elsewhere. We will be using a lot of demonstration models and actual dental products.

The diagrams will be created by Dr David Chen or by our illustrator, Michelle who will also be cartoonizing the drawings.

We may use charts, tables, or other forms of media from other sources but they will all have a “Credit:” underneath of them. We will attempt to recreate all of our own media whenever possible because our goal is to have it uniquely ours.

Our Sources

We will cite and give credit where it is due.

The vast majority of our references will be from scholarly journals. We will do our best to minimize usage of secondary and tertiary references.

While telephone is a great game to play in a group, it’s not very helpful especially if you’re seeking healthcare information. Health is held to a higher standard.

AI Policy

When we say that all of our content is created by doctors, we mean it.

While AI (artificial intelligence) and LLMs (large language models) are improving rapidly, they do not hold doctorates nor do they have the experience of a licensed practicing doctor.

We believe that experience trumps theory every single time.

Therefore, there is no place for AI at afterva. Put another way, afterva was, is, and always will be 100% human made. That will be our promise to you and if you want to learn more about how we came to be, visit our about us page.

Dental Services

If you're in NYC and in need of a dentist, our clinical dental practice, 1311 Jackson Ave Dental is accepting new patients.

Our purpose at afterva, is to encourage you to seek in person care with a doctor. It's not meant to be a substitute for medical advice.

A lot of nuances cannot be detected without an in-person clinical exam, which means it is near impossible to diagnose and treat virtually.
